YARRRRRN!
So I'm pretty shitty at updating these days. This is mostly bcause I've been working on relatively big projects, and don't have that much to share.
Ah, Facebook. I was chatting to Meg one evening after she mentioned in her status that she had purchased Jacquard acid dyes, and we agreed that we needed to have a yarn-dyeing party at her abode! (Her chronicle of the yarn-dyeing expedition is here.) We started with Kool-aid on some old yarn, and came up with this:
The colors here are washed out because of the crazy-bright sunlight. But I promise you, these two colors were dubbed "nuclear waste" because of their AWESOME brightness. Certainly makes you not want to drink kool-aid anymore.
There will be finished projects soon eough. My halloween costume will be partially knitted, and I am waiting on the model for one thing that's been finished... So in the meantime, here is Orangecat by the fire and one of my blueberry muffins.

365.9: OC on Satin
I'm trying to resist the urge to post 365 cat pictures... I couldn't resist this one, though, because we had to cover our giant black bean bags with our old sheets because this particular cat is just SO sheddy!
Also, I'm very proud of my cat-parenting skills; Orangecat has stopped having so many dry skin issue since we switched the babes to wet food. That means no more nosebleeds, and no more dirty dry-bloody nose, and a lot fewer eye goobers. Hooray! Healthier kitten!

I decided that since I grossly overestimated the amount of yarn I needed for my new hat, some new glovies were in order.

Pattern: The ubiquitous Fetching
Mods: None, but I probably should have killed the picot bind off.
At least they can be used to beat up kittens.

I lied. Orangecat and Blackcat won't actually be a year old until February 2nd... But Steve took some pictures of them and I couldn't resist posting them. The kittens are now cats.

Breaktime fun
I really do love my cats, but sometimes I wonder why. Last night I fell asleep on the couch and then groggily went upstairs. I left out my sock knitting in my absent-mindedness. When I woke up this morning, the cats had destroyed another DPN and made a HUGE mess of my ball of Socks that Rock, as you can see. I've already had to cut two sections off, and the mess isn't much better than pictured at the moment. Ugh!
So, I'm planning to make Gloria from Noro Knits soon. I just have to free up the needles that are currently being used to make an expandable shopping bag... soon, soon. I got the yarn at Lavender & Peonies in a town just a bit north of here. I was pretty well blown away by the friendliness of the ladies, as well as the nice sale that was going on!
On top of the new acquisitions, I don't really have to feel one iota of guilt for spending money for two reasons:
- I sold two of my books back on amazon already, fetching me more than $100
- Steve got a steady job!
Here's hoping the new job doesn't suck. It's only eight minutes away. I'm a little too proud of him, I think; but it's been so long since he's had a job with a decent company or that wasn't temporary and home-based... Too bad for him, he has to wake up early now!

It's not just about politics, but also my booze!
The pink mouse I made for the kittens last month finally met its maker. After spending the night in the cats' water bowl, I decided that it was in their best interest to just throw the soggy, tailless, unraveling, partially-felted guy away.
His replacement was made out of some leftover Malabrigo. I'm sad to report that this new kitten toy isn't holding up so well; after just one day of terror from Orangecat and Blackcat, his i-cord tail is already unraveled and gone! Oh well, it's obvious that these guys still love him, so I'm not too heartbroken just yet.
The Flame Wave socks from Favorite Socks finished! Fishnets no more, I rather like their second chance at life as comfy socks. I wish I could use these for the Southern Summer of Socks, but that action doesn't start until Monday. Don't worry, there is plenty of sock yarn just waiting for my sole goal of being knitted up!
Speaking of Monday, I should probably go to Meijer and get more liquor. Why, you ask? Well, my government is shutting down. It boggles the mind that the fact that Michigan is going into government-induced anarchy isn't making national news. Most of the residents of this fine state were blissfully unaware of the fact that this was a possibility. What do we get? We get limited police force, limited funding to colleges, and no distribution of liquor, among a lot of other random, annoying things until the legislature comes to some agreement over their budget. The most tragic part of this isn't really the liquor, it's the bazillions of people who suddenly are laid off. Virtually every government worker is out of work starting Monday. They are only keeping people in prisons and hospitals and such to keep this from being complete state-induced anarchy.
There are a lot of fingers being pointed at our governor, but I don't think it's entirely fair to place the blame on her. Rather, what I see is a bipartisan host of morons in the legislature so stubborn and so motivated by sheer politics rather than goodwill that they've caused a shitstorm. At least Governor Granholm has been proposing a budget since January...
No wonder West Virginia's economy is better than ours. Fuck you, Michigan. I'm going to go buy another huge bottle of Stoli while I still can.

Success!
I hear horror stories of finicky kittens who don't like the things that their owners lovingly knit for them. My last cat, Dumars, was definitely this way. I just finished my retro-colored Kitty Pi, which is really more of a Kitty Spot. With the way I added increases, I just cannot get the sides to stand up, even with vigorous blocking!
Thank goodness that they don't care:
Orangecat and Blackcat both investigated and then immediately plopped down on their new bed! Yay!
Now hopefully they weren't just being polite and will continue to sit on it. As far as the pattern goes, because of my increases I basically used five skeins of lamb's pride bulky, although my leftovers suggest I could have gotten it out of four with a solid-colored version. The fuzz is my mom's free skein of Bernat Disco. A while back they ran a promo where they would send you a skein of this yarn - too bad it's metallic and glittery and furry and just overall not very nice. The kittens don't mind.

Free sample to FO
I went to Threadbear to pick up another skein of Lamb's Pride for the Kitty Pi in progress. They gave me, in a little plastic baggie, probably about 25-35 yards of Colinette Iona, as a "free sample." The yarn retails for $23.50, apparently. I've never been much of a fan of Colinette yarns, so what did I do?
I made a cat toy. A wool/silk/mohair mouse that the cats can attempt to shred. Wouldn't want that ugly yarn to go to waste...
Both Orangecat and Blackcat seem to agree that the mouse was a good use of of free yarn.

Two little FOs, safe arrival?
I think the move went smoothly. At any rate, I got out of a lot of the heavy lifting when we realized that someone needed to pick up the keys to the place by 4:00. This was at 2:30, and we were approximately 1 1/2 hours away. Yeah. I got to drive (with the kittens) like a bat out of hell, after frantically calling the leasing office and telling them I'd be there RIGHT AT 4:00. I made it at 3:45. I rule.
We used to rely on roommates for a lot of random things that we never thought about. Pots and pans, knives, vacuums, lamps, and the list goes on. The last couple of days have been frantic trips to Lowe's, Target, Meijer, and Ikea. (The Ikea expedition and subsequent assembly woes could be its own entry.) Consequently, Steve and I have been whittling away our savings on all sort of exciting townhouse-stuff. Yes, you read that right: townhouse. Cheaper than the old two-bedroom, this time with central air and cats.
I'm not sure where I packed my Kitty Pi WIP. I know where Mariah is, but there has just been so much other stuff to do, that I haven't knit since Tuesday. I think I'm going to explode. I have to find Kitty Pi tonight, because those rats NEED a place to lay down!
The only real knitting progress in the past week are a couple of dishcloths that were inspired by my Sugar 'n' Cream shopping spree.
This is the ubiquitous Ballband Dishcloth. I've made a bunch of these before, but this one is a bit more rectangular (read: shorter) than others. I basically went in pattern until I was out of the pink ombre, which was a small ball in the stash.
This is a Three and One Checkered Cloth out of chocolate brown sugar 'n' cream and beige/white sugar 'n' cream twists. The pattern was easily memorized, and makes for an interesting texture. I was getting sick of Ballband cloths, as those have been my standard for two-color dishcloths. This pattern worked out well enough that I might try to make a couple of more... until I get sick of this pattern also. Anyone have any other two-color dishcloth patterns? I may just make one up, or adapt a garterlac or something.
Anyhow, I need to get back to work making things look like home around here. The pile of boxes is slowly shrinking, and soon our front room WILL be usable... Much to the chagrin of the kittens, I'm sure, who think it is their personal playground.
I may talk about the Ikea expedition tomorrow. It made for a really entertaining waste of a day...

This is for Rose...
Orangecat and Blackcat at eight weeks. They're like... hmmm... six months now. They belonged to a co-worker of Steve's who developed an allergy to them, and has been living with sinus issues for too long. To make matters worse, the co-worker's job is being moved to Florida, and he didn't want to move the kittens that far... thus, we get them. They're sweethearts.
See you Thursday. Our internet gets turned on somewhere between noon and 3:00...
